Post with 1 note
Here’s the thing you guys, I don’t want to spoil the movie for any of you, so I don’t want to give too much away here. HOWEVER, I will tell you guys some of the things that I liked about this movie. If you’re worried I’m going to start spilling out spoilers, stop reading. Or don’t. I’m not bothered.
The movie was great. Now, obviously I’m biased. My last week of posts should probably tell you that much. Sometimes, though, biases will ruin a movie. And they didn’t. I didn’t focus on every detail in Cap’s background, I just wanted to watch the movie as someone who loved the character of Captain America and wanted justice done by him. And it was awesome.
They captured everything from Steve’s understanding of why he needs to fight to his willingness to do whatever it takes and to sacrifice anything for his cause. Those things are tough to do realistically and without making it cheesy but the movie captured it well and made Steve believable. What was more impressive to me was the depth in the relationships in the movie. Bucky’s first appearance in the movie must have lasted all of ten minutes and by the end of it, you really believe that he and Steve are very close friends and that their relationship is real. There also tends to be a weakness in the love interest plots of superhero movies where the hero is the love interest because he’s powerful or because, well, he has to be. You can see the traces of Steve and Peggy’s relationship blooming before the serum is administered, when she has a genuine empathy and compassion for him that blossoms into physical attraction and respect for his courage. Finally, the relationship between Rogers and Erskine was a great and necessary fast relationship. Stanley Tucci is, as always, charming and witty and quickly befriends Steve but, more importantly, endears himself to the audience and makes the audience truly believe Steve cares for him, cares enough to be genuinely angry when he (spoiler) is killed.
The plot itself was good, though I wonder how well people who didn’t know the comics followed the Red Skull’s attempt at harnessing power from the cube. The montages were both pretty fun, if a little campy (I think a movie like this needs some camp to it anyway, something to break up the tension) and (spoiler) Bucky’s death, while totally heartbreaking, was done well and leaves the door open for a possible Winter Soldier storyline for future Cap movie or spinoff movie (given his fall into frozen waters). I also was impressed with the amount of Marvel references they stuck in but without hitting us over the head with it (the Human Torch model at the Stark Expo, the Commandos never getting reference by name, save one time Dum Dum being called Dugan, Zola’s first appearance in the magnifying glass, etc.). The real downside to me was the downside that I have with the movie business in general. Steering towards 3D totally sucks. I know I have no desire to see movies in 3D, I can tell depth just fine the way they are. I don’t know if any of you love 3D or whatever but I can’t bring myself to care for it. What does bother me about the 3D is that, in non-3D versions, you can pick out all the gimmicky scenes just put in there for 3D and it’s distracting and pulls you out of the movie a little. I can’t totally fault Cap for that, but I can fault the industry as a whole.
Overall, I loved this movie. Regardless of if you are a Cap fan or aren’t or don’t even really like movies or heroes, I would highly recommend checking it out. Okay, maybe not if you don’t like movies. Jerk.
